The Tourism Forecasting Committee is an independent body charged with providing tourism investors, industry and government with industry consensus forecasts of activity for international, domestic, and outbound tourism sectors.

The resources for the Tourism Forecasting Committee are provided by Tourism Research Australia, a business unit of Tourism Australia.

Objectives

The Tourism Forecasting Committee aims to produce high quality forecasts of key tourism indicators that will:

• improve private and public sector investment and marketing decision making
• provide an understanding of changing industry dynamics, including in times of increased uncertainty, and 
• assist in the formulation of public policy at national and regional levels within the Australian tourism sector.

Activities

The Tourism Forecasting Committee draws on a wide range of expertise from the tourism industry, and industry service providers including the financial sector and government to:

• develop and enhance methodologies employed in forecasting tourism activity, economic contribution and investment needs, including analysis of the impact of supply constraints
• recommend dissemination strategies and products to improve industry use of the forecasts in planning and decision making to the Tourism Australia Board, and
• engage with other tourism research providers to assist in achieving the Tourism Forecasting Committee forecasting objectives.

Membership

The Tourism Forecasting Committee membership draws on the combined expertise of the private and public sectors in the tourism and finance industries. Chaired by Bernard Salt, (KPMG), committee members are drawn from the Australian Bankers' Association; Australian Standing Committee on Tourism; Australian Tourism Export Council; Department of Resources, Energy and Tourism; Qantas; Queensland Tourism Industry Council; Tourism Australia and TTF Australia.

Tourism Research Australia Forecasting and Analysis Section provides secretariat support to the Tourism Forecasting Committee and sub committee - the Tourism Forecasting Committee Technical Committee.
