Indigenous visitors are defined as having participated in, amongst other activities, at least one of the following while travelling in Australia: experiencing Indigenous art or craft and cultural display or visiting and Indigenous site or community. International visitors may have also attended an Aboriginal performance.

Supplementry questions regarding Indigenous tourism visitors were included in the 2008 International Visitor Survey and National Visitor Survey. This included an expanded list of Indigenous activities: see Aboriginal art, craft or cultural display, visit an Aboriginal gallery, visit an Aboriginal cultural centre, purchase Aboriginal art/craft or souvenirs, see Aboriginal dance of theatre performance, see an Aboriginal site or Aboriginal community, go on tour with an Aboriginal guide, attend an Aboriginal festival, stay in Aboriginal accommodation or some other interaction with Aboriginal people
